Piano improvisation means to play something off the cuff. Piano improvisation is a skill that you need to learn to be a competent pianist, but it isn’t too hard to learn. Piano improvisation gives you the opportunity to play what you want, when you want and helps you play creatively. The skill of Piano improvisation will help you enormously if you make mistakes in a song or when playing as part of a group. By learning a variety of genres and chord progressions, your piano improvisation skills will increase dramatically.

Here are several piano improvisation methods that you can practice:

To help with piano improvisation melody, simultaneously, play a chord progression in the left hand and its corresponding scale in the right hand, then vary the right hand notes of the scale. Follow a rule, what goes up in the right hand must come down (eventually).  Learn regular chord patterns and play them as broken chords.

1. Vary the octaves of the keys.

2. Don’t always think the right hand plays the melody.

3. Become proficient improvising with a 4/4 beat before changing time signatures.

4. Piano improvisation requires you to play in certain styles, therefore, learn common traits of musical styles such as speed, dynamics, patterns, embellishing etc.

5. If you play the wrong note, use it as part of your piano improvisation. Remember, piano improvisation isn’t written down, it’s often random.

6. Relax your fingers, arms and shoulders and just learn to play randomly. It is recommended that you practice piano improvisation on your own as it can sound a bit weird at first.

7. Don’t expect it to come straight away. Once you learn Piano Improvisation it will come naturally.

8. Imagination is the key. If you think your piano improvisation would help with you imagining scenes or memories, close your eyes and think of them. A lot of piano improvisation is about what you feel at the time, then let your imagination help your fingers.

9. Piano improvisation is like any piano playing – practice. Practicing really is the key with piano improvisation. Often, people who improvise piano have memorized several phrases and they change the tempo and feeling which changes the feel of the performance.

10. Sight reading pieces can help your piano improvisation as you tend to make mistakes but hear what might sound good and remember it.
