Piano Playing Tips                                                   Piano Playing Tips

If you want to see what to expect from your first piano lesson, the below should give you a good idea.
Sometimes considered one of the hardest instruments to play, the piano is also considered one of the most versatile and popular musical instruments around. Once you get the hang of playing two hands simultaneously with various degrees of volume, touch and ability, along with practice, you should become accustom to playing the piano. However, it doesn’t stop there. If you’ve wanted to learn the piano but are unsure of the basics and what to expect, below you will find some 2 brief guides to give you an idea.

The Hands and Music

Music for each hand is written on the ‘staves’ which are the 5 horizontal lines that tell the pianist which notes to be played depending which lines they are written on or the spaces between the lines. Most pieces require the playing of both hands. The notes are written on separate ‘staves’, with a corresponding ‘clef’ at the beginning of each stave to tell you what hand should be playing the notes. Referring to notes played by the right hand, the ‘Treble Clef’ or ‘G Clef” is written and looks a bit like a flamboyant ‘8’. The reason why it is sometimes called the G clef is that the point of the clef is found on the horizontal line that denotes a G note in the right hand. Referring to the notes played by the left hand, the ‘Bass Clef’ or ‘F Clef’ is written and looks a bit like a ‘9’. Again, the reason why it is sometimes referred to as the F clef is that the point of the clef starts on the horizontal line that denotes the F note in the left hand.

The Notes

You’ll see on a keyboard that keys are grouped into white and black. The black notes are then grouped into 2 groups, one of 2 black keys and one of 3 black keys. Virtually in the right in the middle of the keyboard lies the note ‘C’. A white coloured note commonly referred to as Middle ‘C’ as it is pretty much in right in the middle of the keyboard. If you are standing pretty much at the middle of the keyboard, middle ‘C’ can be found as the first white key always to the left of the group of 2 black keys, in the middle of the keyboard. From middle ‘C’ the notes going up the keyboard (to the right) are D, E, F, G, A, B. There are only 7 notes to learn (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and you’ll see that the pattern repeats itself when you get to the 7th note (B). The black notes in between the white notes generally denote if you are going to play a note sharpened or flattened depending on what key you are playing.

It is recommended that you learn the location of the notes (there are only 7), that you familiarize yourself with clefs and staves and that you can easily find middle ‘C’ as these are the most basic points of learning the piano.
