Learn to play the piano from home for free

February 1, 2010 by Anwar Mehdi

The need to hire a piano tutor is no longer necessary with internet connections being installed in every single household worldwide. Piano Playing Tips is one of the websites that help in teaching the art of playing the piano with the help of its articles which are loaded with free piano tips and its video tutorials filmed by more experienced pianists.

To grasp a better understanding of the instrument, a brief introduction of the piano is deemed necessary. The piano was first invented in the Middle Ages, yet, the modern piano was probably made a little before the year 1700. With its sound being soft yet loud at the same time, it is the pianist’s own skill and speed that helps produce different levels of notes and thus varying melodies.

Proper piano lessons always start from the basics of music. Leaning and mastering these are important because if one can’t read notes, then playing them would be impossible. Plus, without the proper recognition of the time taken for each note, i.e. rhythm, the sound played will very likely cause others to cringe, even if one did follow the order of the notes on the sheet.

The correct way to learn to play piano is to first learn the difference between pitch, values and meter. Pitches are the 7 notes which one will use while playing music and usually are named after the 1st 7 letters of the alphabets (A-G). Each note’s values determines how long each note will be, whereas meter indicates the regular recurring pattern of beats which can be weak or strong yet are of equal duration.

With these 3 basics understood, practicing them along with intervals, scales, chords and symbols are important to be able to associate a sound to each note read and played. The necessity of having a piano arises here, yet, if that is too expensive, a cheaper electric keyboard can do the trick.

With all that learnt, one’s aim to learn to play piano is closer, yet still not fully achieved. Piano lessons do not consist of only learning notes, but also one how to play them effectively for music to flow smoothly. Here, the website’s free piano tips may not be as efficient as its video tutorials, which mainly emphasize on portraying the grace in which experienced pianists’ hands move. By trying to imitate them, beginners will learn to glide their fingers over the keys of the piano.

Pianists are not made overnight. However, with constant practice and a few of Piano Playing Tips’ articles and videos guiding the way, even clumsy beginners can gain the skills and confidence to become graceful experts.
